Ok, this isn't a Hack...
At 1st Gmail seemed a pretty cool thing, and it still is.
But all the Spam coming in. I'm trying to introduce my boss to the benefits of Gmail, but I'm embarassed by all the Spam.

GMail is not learning a thing from my reports and filtering

Fernando Cassia has noticed this too
www.theinquirer.net/

Right now I have 6854 Spam messages. That's from the last 30 days. Most are what Gmail has filtered out and some I have manually filtered.
If you like go to my profile page ("Spam" in the left column) and take a look at the messages left un-filtered.

I did some research on how Gmail filters Spam.
It seems that the more you log in, the less Spam you get. Here the theory.

You log in and see Spam that wasn't filtered out and you report it as Spam. You and maybe 200-300 other Gmail users. Gmail now will filter this Spam for the other thousands of Gmail users, since a couple hundred of us think it's Spam.

Aaron Dragushan of Wondermill agrees with this theory and further suggests
"Gmail quietly reaches into the inboxes of those other 49,750 people and gently nudges the message into the spam folder. Their key insight was that because they're a web-based email provider, they don't so much "deliver" mail as make it available for viewing. All the people who haven't logged in or refreshed their browser window haven't actually "received" the message yet. If you were to make it disappear, they'll never know it was there, and don't have to trip over it. Huzzah!"

Therefore, those people who either don't look at their Gmail everyday, or let the Spam pile up without reporting it---are the helping Spam get through.

I'm now working on other ways to better help Gmail Filter Spam.

Here's what I did just to experiment.
I copied the Sender & Subject lines from the Gmail I know is Spam.
I posted them to my tribe blog.
I fed the link to my blog entry to

This sorted and ranked the top words and phrases.
The 3 word phrase seems to summarize the words the best.
Then I set up filters in Gmail

Wow, really? I hardly get any spam on my gmail that doesnt get caught by the spam filter...it's FAR better than the filter on my yahoo or hotmail accounts (which these days I use specifically as spamtrap/sacrificial-lamb accounts.
But then, I use gmail as my primary account now, and login multiple times a day.

Considering how I have used my three webmail addresses in the past (hotmail, yahoo and gmail, in chronological order), I think much has to do with how often I posted my email address somewhere on the web. I try not to post it at all publicly, but some sites will only allow you to register and will always post your email address without using e.g. yourname[at]gmail.com as tribe does.
I took a yahoo address after my hotmail was being overwhelmed by spam. I only used that yahoo address for friends and never gave it out to a stranger or posted it on a website. And I have never gotten one piece of spam.
I have been using gmail for both friends and registration, and the spam has been building up gradually, most of it in the spam box, but I am getting up to 10 a day. I hope this does not repeat the hotmail experience.
